Heinz Hot Sauces – spicing up family classics dishes

A few weeks ago I was sent Heinz’s three new Hot Sauces to try out,  along with ingredients to create easy family meals with a twist using the sauces.  We were all keen to give the recipes a go and try the hot sauces.

The first sauce we tried was Heinz Smokey & Spiced Hot Sauce – Chipotle and Garlic.  The Meal was Fiery Chili Con Carne with Heinz Hot Sauce – Chipotle and Garlic

Ingredients: serves 4-6

  • Large Onion, Chopped
  • 2 cloves of garlic, finely chopped
  • 2 sprigs thyme, roughly chopped
  • 500g Mince Beef
  • 400g can chopped tomatoes
  • 150ml chicken or beef stock
  • 3 tablespoons Heinz Tomatoe Sauce
  • 2 teaspoons paprika
  • 2 teaspoons ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 bay leaf
  •  400g can kidney beans, drained and rinsed
  • 10ml Heinz Hot Sauce- Chipotle and Garlic

 Method:

Sweat the onion, garlic and thyme in a large saucepan.

Meanwhile brown the mince in a seperate pan over a moderate heat.

Add the dried herbs and spices to the onions for a couple of minutes until they release their aroma and then stir into beeft.

Add the tomatoes and leave to cook down for approx 5 minutes

Pour in the stock and add Heinz Tomatoe Sauce.
Drop the bay leaf into the pot, bring to the boil and leave to simmer.
Once the sauce is beginning to thicken add the kidney beans and leave to cook for another   5-10minutes, allowing the beans to soak up the flavours.
Check for seasoning and stir through the Heinz Hot Sauce – Chipotle and Garlic

I first made it the older boys had their weekly football training and it was perfect for warming them up when they got home.  The boys enjoyed the Chili too and I have since made it again at their request.  Instead of boiled rice you could also serve it with a jacket potatoe.  If you like very hot food like dad of 3 you could add some more of the Heinz Hot Sauce – Chipotle and Garlic to your taste.  I loved the Fiery Chili Con Carne, a great dish for the autumn/winter nights.

The Second dish we tried was Simple Spicy Stir Fry with Heinz Hot Sauce – Yellow Habanero.

    Ingredients: serves 2

    • 250g roast pork, cut into lardons
    • 3 spring onions, finely sliced
    • 1 red chili, finely sliced
    • 1 carrot, peeled and finely grated
    • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
    • 10ml Heinz Hot Sauce-Yellow Habanero
Method:

Heat the wok on a high heat and add the oil.

Add all the vegetables and stir-fry for 2 minutes

Add the pork lardons and stir-fry for 1 minute

Add noodles to the wok and toss well over a high heat

Take off the heat and stir through Heinz Hot Sauce – Yellow Habanero

This was a perfect dish as far as dad of 3 was concerned.  It contained the right amount of heat for him.  Myself and the boys enjoyed it as well however it was too hot for our liking and we couldn’t finish all of it.  So I think if I was to make it again I would not add quite so much chili or hot sauce – yellow habanero.  Even though the recipe said it fed two we fed four with the ingredients.

The last dish we tried was Mexican Soup with Heinz Hot Sauce – Green Jalapeno

Ingredients:  serves 2

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 4 garlic cloves, crushed
  • 1 chili finely chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 400g can plum tomatoes
  • 1 1/2 litres chicken stock
  • 2 chicken breasts, sliced
  • 2 limes, juiced

Garnish:

  • Homemade nachos
  • mixed beans
  • slices of avocado
  • 10ml Heinz Hot Sauce – green Jalapeno

Method:
heat the oil in a large saucepan

Add the onion and garlic, soften for 5 minutes, and then stir in the chili,  cumin, tomatoes and chicken stock

Blitz in a food processor in batches, or use a hand blender to puree until smooth

Return to the pan, and then bring to the boil.

Add the chicken, reduce the heat, and then simmer for 10 minutes until cooked through.

Stir in the lime juice and season with Heinz Hot Sauce – Green Jalapeno, then ladle into bowls.

I’ve never made soup before so this was a great dish to try.  We found again that although the recipe said it fed two, we fed four of us with some left over.  We all enjoyed the soup, it really warmed you up inside and tasted delicious served with bread.  Dad of 3 had seconds and the first thing that was said was “when are we going to have it again”.

Since trying the three recipes dad of 3 has enjoyed using the hot sauces on a variety of other food, from baked beans on toast to ham sandwiches!.  Proving that Heinz Hot Sauces are great for spicing up pretty much everything.

Heinz Hot Sauces are available from all good supermarkets and cost around £1.49 each.

Disclaimer:  We were sent the Heinz Hot Sauces and ingredients to make the three meals for the purpose of undertaking the reviews by Heinz.  However the views expressed are our own honest opinion.
