Black and White Photography – The perfect inspiration for writing

Today we paid a visit to Laugharne Castle in Pembrokeshire, we love exploring new castles and gardens whenever we have the opportunity and as CADW are holding their open doors weekend this weekend we grabbed the opportunity.  I last visited Laugharne as a child and remember visiting Dylan Thomas’s Boathouse but not really the castle.  So was as keen as the children to explore this morning.  Laugharne is well known thanks to Dylan Thomas who lived there from 1949 until 1953 and is thought to have been the inspiration for Under Milk Wood.

It took us just under an hour to get to Laugharne and we quickly found somewhere to park, below the castle and made our way round to the entrance.  The boys were keen to head straight into the castle ruins to explore but as there was a wedding party taking photographs we told them it would be better to start with the castle grounds.

Trystan quickly spotted a maze and ran ahead wanting to be the first to run through it.  In fact it was only a small maze around the rose garden but the children had fun running around it.  We decided to follow the castle wall around the gardens making our way towards the castle itself.  We stopped along the way to take in the breathtaking views over the estuary of the River Taf from the castle walls.

The older two spotted what they thought was a shed ahead of us and we made our way towards it, I hadn’t expected it to be open to visitors but as we approached we could see that in fact it was a little stone room which had been set out as a writing room with a typewriter, a wireless radio and a chair overlooking the estuary.

The little room would certainly lend itself to being a perfect place for writing or simply enjoying the views.

We spent a good twenty minutes taking in the atmosphere and enjoying the views before making our way into the castle ruins itself.

After a fortnight’s break I am joining in with PODcast’s Black and White Photography Project again, if you would like to see more black and white photography why not pop over and take a look at the others taking part.

I love views through doors and windows in black and white – there is something intriguing about imagining who is looking through and why they are there. I agree this would be a lovely place to write and contemplate. #bwphotoproject

  4. What dramatic photos. Poetic. #bwphotoproject
